What Ever Happened to Apple?

I truly enjoyed every moment of this tale. Whatever Happened to Apple? is a lively journey of one apple from its conception to what happens - or should happen - to its remains. Apple is a happy little creation, growing in a beautiful orchard filled with ripening fruits. Soon he is picked and placed on display where he is eventually purchased. The family brings him home and sets him on the counter for days... and days. Finally his fate arrives and his spirit soars, for his destiny to nourish someone was fulfilled. However, he becomes very, very sad when the child throws him into the trash bin rather than the compost pile!

The illustrations were created by the author, Margaret Cecconet, and I was touched by how simple yet lovely and educational they were. Every page is filled with illustrations that look to be done in pencil crayon and crayons were truly artistic. I thought it was a perfect touch to provide educational information at the end about composting process and a landfill's composition. The book closes with Author's Notes, information about the author, simple steps to backyard composting that the reader can easily employ and a short list of American and Canadian resources and links for those who would like to learn more about the concept of organic waste management.

I encourage parents to pick up this book for their young ones - it's never too early to teach conscious living ideals. What Ever Happened to Apple? was published and printed in the US on 100% recycled paper. I applaud the publishing practices the author has chosen for her exceptional children's book. Without hesitation, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
